Calling All Uptown Chicago Hipsters (ok... Indies, too)

Uptown Chicago Riviera Theatre
The Riviera Theatre In Uptown Chicago

The Riviera Theatre in Chicago's Uptown Neighborhood is perhaps the most iconic concert venue on the city's North Side. Here are a few local (and historic) facts:

*Location: 4746 N. Racine Avenue

*CTA 'L' Stop: Red Line -- Lawrence Avenue (or get off at Wilson and run like hell for two blocks)

*Built: 1917 as a neighborhood movie house

*Seating Capacity: 2500

*Architectural Design: French Renaissance Revival by Rapp and Rapp

*1917 Ticket Price: $0.10 for 'Cleopatra'

*2014 Ticket Price: $60.25 for 'Wilco'

*Hip Factor: 8 on a 1-10 Scale (gotta knock off points for no AC in the summer)

Additional notes: as I mentioned above, it can get a little stuffy in there (especially in August) so you may want to tuck a flask of H2O into your summer flannel--but there is a bar in the back if you're so inclined, i.e. age 21+ and not in a 12 Step Recovery program. Also, word is: 'Security' can get a little rough at times so behave yourself. Remember, it's Uptown and they're not above yanking you to the sidewalk by your lumberjack beard.

Uptown Chicago Renters...Ready to Move?

Darlington Hotel in Chicago Uptown neighborhood
Picture: "The Darlington" One of the few remaining North Side Chicago 'transient' hotels

The Darlington Hotel is a 1920s era SRO located at the corner of Racine and Leland Avenues in Chicago's Uptown Neighborhood. Gritty on its best day, The 'D' is a housing option for those unfortunate souls who find themselves one jump ahead of a homeless shelter. Godspeed to them all.

For all others, the fall real estate season is winding down and there are some negotiation opportunities to be had in the real estate market place. If you have a dog (or even two) and think its easier to just stay put than pack up and move in winter, then click here >>> for a current list of Chicago Pet Friendly Rentals. You may be surprised what a non-owner-occupied condo might rent for in the off-season.

Or, if you are simply curious about what condos are trading for on your block, then click here >>> for quick access to my Chicago MLS Property Search.

And if all else fails, The D rents rooms by the week.

Ghetto Yacht

Chicago Forest Glen neighborhood yard boat
I can understand why someone might want to get drunk and fall off of this neighborhood eyesore.  What I cant understand is who (worth fighting over) would be on the thing in the first place. I suppose that one man's yacht is just another man's crime scene. Ah splendor in da grass...

A State Fair Holiday

August 2011 Illinois State Fair Highlights

While visiting the Capitol Building in Springfield, IL last week, we had the pleasure of meeting Brian Schweitzer, Governor of Montana. A wonderful fellow, the Governor chatted with us in the parking lot amidst a light morning drizzle just before we headed out for Race Day at the Fairgrounds. (Governor Schweitzer was kind enough to pose with Mona for the above snapshot.) And when asked if he personally liked to bet on the ponies, the Govenor took a moment, then answered with a mile wide grin...

"Well, let me put it this way...," he said. "If I lose, my wife gets mad at me. If I win, she wants jewelry. Let's just leave it at that..."

And I did.  What a great guy. He has my write-in ballot for 2012.

Anyway, I was lucky enough to cash one winning ticket myself that day. There's only one thing worse, I've found, than not buying your wife jewelry after a good day at the track--and that is, buying cheap jewelry ($249.20 buys a lot of turquoise but not much else). So in spite of the Good Governor from Montana's sage counsel, I subsequently parlayed my bankroll into and afternoon of Elephant Ears, Pizza-On-A-Stick, Deep Fried Twinkies, and one-too-many gut spinning amusement rides.  (Oh yeah, and one last 6 Horse Exacta/Tri Box Super Wheel in the 9th that did not come in.  Oh well...)

Can't wait to go back next year (and also plan that long overdue road trip to Montana).

Oh My Chicago, (1986)!

vintage jean jacket
Spotted this in a thrift store window on Diversey Parkway. Not my style, nor my size but I almost bought it anyway. I was thinking about spraying it with shellac then draping it from a light pole on Clark Street by Wrigley Field-- like one of those Chicago neighborhood banners you see hanging everywhere.  It must be fun to be a thrift store window dresser....ooops; did I just have a gay moment? Oh well; don't ask dont tell.

And Don't Fail.
